Oakworth War Graves.

Here are the names of those people from Oakworth and the surrounding district who served in the Great War.

Their names appear on a roll of honour created by The Men of Worth Project through research carried out by Andy Wade which took place over almost twenty years. It was the first research done by the Men of Worth Project and some of it actually predates the Project’s inception.

A white page with images and scrolls at the top. down each side are icons representing home and overseas and in the centre are five columns of names of people who served in the great war. The centre column is in red ink.
Oakworth’s Centenary roll of honour for the Great War. There are 475 names.

Description of the roll of honour:

The roll of honour itself was designed and drawn up in its entirety by Andy Wade with all images and icons being created from scratch using Xara Photo and Graphic Designer. The printing was carried out by The Copy Shop of 1, Chapel Lane, Keighley and the mounting and framing was carried out by M.J. Framing on 14, High Street, Keighley using special archival and reflection free glass, which enables the roll of honour to be seen and photographed.
A separate and identical copy of the printed roll of honour sheet has been donated to Keighley Library Archives in the Local Studies Room.
The icons on the roll of honour represent ‘Home’ and ‘Overseas’ and are items which would have been recognised by the people who served, both in the Uk and overseas. They cover Oakworth itself, the wool combing industry, various organisations supporting the war effort and many of the regiments and corps which they served in. Finally there are four images of the medals which would have been issued for service in a theatre of war. At the bottom of each icon column is a forget me not flower. At the top are images of French blue cornflower and the British red poppy representing remembrance.

A young woman and a man stand at either side of a large framed and glazed war memorial.
Oakworth Gala Queen Hannah Morris unveils the new roll of honour, assisted by Andy Wade.

Five shields appear for five of the allied nations of Italy, Belgium, UK, France and Russia. At the bottom corners are the logos of The Men of Worth Project, Oakworth Village Society, Oakworth Forward and Keighley Town Council, all of whom supported the creation of this roll of honour.
(The French blue cornflower is included because Alfred Aucante who lived in the village, went on to serve with the French Army.)

This roll of honour was unveiled by Oakworth Gala Queen Hannah Morris on 10th November 2019 at a ceremony held at Holden Hall immediately after the Remembrance Day ceremony in Holden Park, Oakworth. There are 475 names on the roll of honour of people who served in the Great War. It is on permanent display in the entrance foyer of Oakworth Community Hall and is visible through the front door glass, even while the hall is closed.
