Keighley Union Workhouse roll of honour

A framed and glazed roll of honour. This is made from a wooden square section of about 30 mm square, the four sides are overlapped at their joints with a halving joint and each end projects out about 65 mm, creating a cross at each corner.
The memorial is behind glass and is made from paper. It is faded where the names are written and has a broad water stain down the front.
The fully coloured decoration at the top is a patriotic scene of four servicemen facing forward with flags billowing behind them. At each corner is a small war related scene.
Keighley Union Workhouse roll of honour

A framed and glazed roll of honour for Keighley Union Workhouse. This is currently in the care of Cliffe Castle Museum, Keighley. It was unknown for many years until recently when it was discovered amongst some paintings in their archives. It wasn’t with the other heavy, wooden or metal war memorials in storage probably because it was viewed as artistic piece.

Decorations at the top:
Two large Union Flags with four figures in front which are, a soldier medic, an infantryman, a sailor and an airman.
In each corner are four painted pictures, which represent Field artillery and an Aeroplane, a Royal Navy battleship, a kilted soldier running into battle and a Lancer, charging on horseback.
