The St. James Church Roll of Honour:

An out of focus image of a framed and glazed, illuminated roll of honour for St. James Church, Cross Roads.
St. James Church’s missing roll of honour.

There was a framed and glazed roll of honour which was apparently in storage at Cliffe Castle Museum. However, in a visit in 2010 it could not be located.
All we know of it’s existence is from an out of focus photograph in a photo file folder at Keighley Library and this photograph had been supplied by P. D. Lodge.

Visible text on the roll of honour:

St James’ Church Cross Roads August 4th 1914.
Roll of Honour of the Men of this Parish who have taken up arms in Defence of King and Country.
There is then a square section with seven columns of names, all of which are illegible, but they can be counted and there appear to be 250 names.
At the bottom it says:
GOD SAVE THE KING.

The Second World War Roll of Service:

A framed and glazed board with three separate pieces of paper with hand written names.
St. James Church, Roll of Service.

There is also a Roll of Service mounted on the wall at St. James Church. It is a rectangular framed and glazed board with three paper lists of names.
First sheet contains 108 names.
Second sheet contains 107 names.
Third sheet contains 68 names.
Total 283.

There is no date on this roll, but we believe it’s from the Second World War because some of the military terms are from that era. Also, at least eight (possibly more) of the men named on it were killed in the Second World War:
They are:
Askam, Joseph
Birtwhistle, Eric
Cleverly, Joseph
Green, Wilfred Sutcliffe
Smith, J. W.
Sunderland, Cecil
Taylor, Jack.
Thornber, Jack
