WAR MEMORIAL WINDOW.,
A beautiful stained glass window, placed in Lund Park Wesleyan Church in memory of the men and women connected with the church who served and died during the Great War, was dedicated on Sunday afternoon in the presence of a large congregation. The window, which is the work of Messrs. H. J. Salisbury, Ltd., of St. Albans, depicts the ascension of our Lord. The figure of our Lord is seen ascending, and standing around are eleven apostles. The window is noteworthy for its rich colouring. Below is to be fixed a bronze, tablet bearing in sunken letters the names of those who served during the war, and in the centre there will be a panel containing the names of the fallen. The wording of the tablet is as follows:
“To the Glory of God and in honoured memory of the men of this church who gave their lives in the Great War, and in gratitude for the safety of the men and women who served and returned this window dedicated.”
In the centre panel will appear the names of fallen – Thomas Clapham, Harry K. Dickinson, James Harrison, Thomas Holmes, Walter Lambert, Gilbert H. Midgley, John Northrop, Harry Pickles, John T. Raw, Riley Shuttleworth, Alfred Southam. Jonas Stoney, Harry Throup, Edgar Ward, Christopher M. Wilson, and Ernest Hall. The dedication and unveiling of the memorial was performed by the Rev. Dingley P. Fuge, who was pastor at the church at the outbreak of war. Special music was rendered by the choir, and the hymns sung were: “O God our help in ages past, The humble souls who seek the Lord,” “Ten thousand times ten thousand,” and “Jerusalem the Golden.”
Note:
The wording of the newspaper article suggests that the bronze tablet was to be fixed at a later date, although we do not know if this had already occurred.
