Deputy Lieutenant David Pearson DL JP MA:
“I am though most grateful to all of you for including me in the splendid evening, which went much further than simply launching a commemorative trail.
What struck me was the way that this event and project, remembering people who died for their country at least eighty years ago, all probably now out of the memory of anyone present, brought together so many people from the village and locality, making it something that had a real community feel to it, way beyond that of the launch of a new project alone. There was a huge cross section of residents, from the youngest to some of the most elderly. Short as it was, I thought it was terrific and of meaning quite beyond its primary purpose, worthy as that was alone. There was such a feel of community an belonging that one rarely senses.
Andy suggested in his remarks that that this might be the first of several in the Valley and we can only hope that this is so. Small in itself, the commemoration of ninety-six local people was no mean achievement and clearly represented a huge amount of research, apart from the practicalities involved. It is clearly a template for the future and the bringing together of communities and I hope that I can look forward to future invitations to similar occasions.”
Cllr Abdul Shohid, Chairman of the Events & Community Development Committee:
“As Chairman of the Events & Community Development Committee, I am immensely proud that Keighley Town Council has been able to support the Oakworth Remembrance Trail. This project is a moving tribute to the 96 men from Oakworth who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First and Second World Wars. By sharing their stories and marking their homes, we ensure that their bravery and the impact on our community are never forgotten. I would like to thank The Men of Worth Project, our local cadets, volunteers, and everyone involved for their dedication and hard work. I encourage everyone to visit the trail, explore the website, and take a moment to remember these remarkable individuals.”
